Chapter 40 At the party in Embassy (1)
However,
the ambassador ordered Shy-Rock to attend parties and actively communicate with
U.S. citizens. Nobody in the United
States didn’t want to know how Israel could win overwhelmingly in the Six Day
War and how the Israeli Air Force performed a key role. A rumor spread rapidly among
the diplomatic corps in Washington, lawmakers, and Jews living in the United
States that the newly assigned military attaché played the major role in that
war.
The
Ambassador had received many requests to share the true story from new military
attaché. He decided to make the guy a "walking billboard". Ambassador
called Shy-Rock to his office as soon as he took up his new post and told him.
“You gained
fame as a brave person in the previous war. There was no doubt that your precious
experience would give a great impression on the American people. Americans love
simple moral story. In other words, there is nothing easier for the Yankees to
understand that Israelis are good guys and the Arabs are bad guys."
At
that time, Shy-Rock felt somewhat uncomfortable with the ambassador's explanation.
He believed that he was not wrong in fighting the Arabs. But he also felt that
war was neither good nor bad. War was either win or loss. He thought that it
was necessary to win when the fight was inevitable.
Ambassador continued to say,
“I believe
that if Jewish people in the party will be encouraged by your story, they will
donate money for Israel. And we can expect to collect more money from Jews in
U.S. Your speech is your additional duty as military attaché to loosen their
purse strings.”
It
was his last minutes to feel somewhat out of place. Originally, he grew up in
military organization, where his superiors' orders were absolute. An embassy was
just like an army. The ambassador was the highest authority. No one could
disobey the ambassador's orders. In addition, the embassy was dominated by staff
of foreign ministry. He was nothing more than a mere soldier dispatched by the
Ministry of Defense. It was a natural consequence to obey the ambassador.
