Chapter 32. Rotating Star of David: The top of the
formation dived into the sea (2)
On
the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, a mechanic of second-class
sailor looked up at an approaching fighter. Just after finishing the storage
work of the F15, he was about to return to the cabin. Then he heard a blaring
siren ringing from the bridge and witnessed that several sailors on lifeboat
were descending to the surface of the sea.
<There
should have been no plans for any fighter jet to land on this aircraft carrier,
but-----------. Could it be that a fighter jet took off from a nearby land base
was asking for the permission of emergency landing due to an accident or
something else? Even so, no fighter without a landing equipment can land safely
on an aircraft carrier. Furthermore, it's impossible for a pilot with no
experience to land on.>
Not
only him but also many soldiers who were off-duty appeared on the deck. They
heard the rumor prevailing within the carrier. They looked up at the northern
sky breathlessly. It was rare to witness such a thrilling incident on the
carrier where there was little entertainment.
The
fighter flew straight towards the carrier. It looked like to see a slow-motion
movie. A few hundred meters in front of the carrier, the windshield of the
fighter sprang up and the pilot was violently thrown out. Then his parachute
opened and he slowly landed on the water. The lifeboat roared its engine with
shrill sound and rushed to the destination.
Unmanned
fighter that has thrown out its pilot fell down on the sea. Watchers
acknowledged the unfamiliar hexagonal star mark on the body of jet. The scene
caught sailors’ breath.
When
the Israeli jet hit the surface of the sea, it jumped with high splash of water.
The jet stood on its head. Then it upset and slammed into the sea. The
hexagonal star on the body also slowly rotated. The soldiers were at first
annoyed that the star seemed to rotate very smoothly. But they soon realized
why. The accustomed pentagonal star was awkward to rotate. In comparison, a
hexagonal star could rotate smoothly.
They
also recognized that the pentagonal star looked more stable than the hexagonal
one. The pentagonal star had a human figure with outstretched arms and legs. The
star stood on two legs, with its arms outstretched to the side. It kept its
eyes front. A stout pentagonal star showed self-confidence. On the contrary,
the hexagonal star, which was symmetrical both vertically and horizontally,
looked stable at first glance. But the "Star of David" in front of them
rolled on a wave. It slid on the surface of sea and then disappeared from the
sight of the sailors.
In
the sea, the "Star of David" was spinning slowly for a while. But
eventually the body stopped its rotation and swayed like a leaf as it sank. The
sunlight from the surface was gradually fading out. The shape of hexagonal star
became unrecognizable. The jet was swallowed into the perfect darkness of the
Persian Gulf.
The
captain on the bridge confirmed the rescue of Israeli pilot with binoculars. He
immediately reported the result to the Pentagon.
After
receiving the report, the Secretary of Defense muttered to himself.
"Now
I can lend it to Shy Rock."
